The sheer size of this altar is breathtaking, making it possible to imagine the great sacrifices performed here, which included as many as 100 oxen at a time. The Italian word ecatombe, used today to mean a disaster, actually comes from the Greek words meaning to kill 100 - Hekatòn - oxen - bôus.
