Description

As strange as it may sound, over time the "City of the Dead", a Muslim cemetery located in the east of the city, has become a city in its own right where, since the middle of the 19C, Cairo's poorest inhabitants have occupied its ancient tombs and mausoleums. Nowadays over half a million people live in this district which does not have a good reputation due to its petty crime. Its northern section is home to the Qaitbay mosque.
