Useful information

Description

A Hittite religious sanctuary similar to Yazilikaya, Alaca Höyük stands in the middle of an arid plain and is home to royal tombs dating from 1900 BC. The more recent Sphinx gate, which was intended to repel evil spirits, bears a bas-relief depicting a two-headed eagle clutching two rabbits in its talons. Orthostates (squared stone blocks) are decorated with friezes bearing images of Hittite kings and queens, jugglers and musicians, and well as the sun goddess Arinna.
