Built in the 17C by the Sikh guru Ram Das, the Golden Temple, the holiest of Sikh temples, stands in the heart of Amritsar, one of the Punjab's major cities. Marble, precious stones and fine gold cover the building, which stands in the centre of the "pool of nectar", the Amrit Sarovar, after which the city is named.
