The building housing the Joan Miró Foundation, designed by Josep Lluís Sert (1902-83), is one of the finest examples of Mediterranean Rationalism, characterized by the contrast between inner and outer spaces. The foundation contains over 10,000 works by Miró, a small collection of works that pay tribute to the artist (Chillida, Saura, Duchamp, Max Ernst and Rauschenberg), the Fuente of Mercúrio by Alexander Calder (fountain created in 1937) and some sculpture by young Catalan artists.
