Description

This is the home of the famous Bayeux tapestry, a masterpiece of embroidered fabric from around 1070, originally for the cathedral. This graphic depiction of life in the Middle Ages spans customs, costumes and architecture. The extraordinary 70m/229ft-long piece of linen features 58 scenes that depict the battle of Hastings (1066) and the conquest of England by William the Conqueror. The origin and history of the tapestry, as well as an insight into how it was made and its conservation, are broached.
