Useful information

Description

The quays are located on the site of the Port Haut: until the 19C, flat-bottomed boats known as "gabares" sailed down the River Dordogne from Argentat to Libourne, bearing their heavy loads of wood or coal. On Quai Fromentèze is the Maison des Gabariers, with its large wooden balcony, which charts this dangerous means of transporting goods and the lives of the boatmen, who worked as fishermen, lumberjacks or carpenters while waiting for the trading waters season (October to March). You can board the Adèle et Clarisse, reconstructed in its original form in 2002 and named in honour of the last two ferrywomen (June to October – guided tour).
