The sturdy keep, which served as a refuge during the Anglo-Scottish wars, was built in 1460; the adjoining mansion is an early-17C addition. Both buildings were abandoned in favour of a neo-Classical mansion, which was completed in 1817. The property has formal gardens and parkland but the main attraction simply has to be the gardens laid out in the quarries that were once mined to build the castle.
