Useful information

Description

Built by Vauban in 1681, then reconstructed by Cormontaigne, this citadel standing proudly on a rocky spur is characteristic of 18C military architecture. After entering via the monumental door you come to the hillock in the centre of the citadel, which offers fine views of the Vosges. The chapel, the only surviving part of Vauban's original castle, was restored according to the 18C building plans and houses a model of the town dating from 1794. An audio-visual tour of the vast underground complex explains the long siege of Bitche.
