This colossal structure (43 000m²) combines water (which penetrates the base), steel and concrete. An impressive vestige of the Second World War, the submarine base was built from 1941 to 1943 to house the German Navy's 12th Submarine Flotilla. It is now a cultural events centre, hosting temporary exhibitions of contemporary art. The venue's underground setting is also hired out for private events.
