Useful information

Description

This picturesque street presents a fine assortment of houses reflecting architectural styles dating from 1800 to 1830. At no. 29A (1800, Charles Bulfinch), note the distinctive purple glass in the house's bowfront. Other examples of the Hill's famed 18C purple window panes-resulting from the glass' manganese dioxide content-may still be seen in a few other dwellings on the Hill (including 63-64 Beacon St.). The graceful trio at nos. 13-17, known as the Swan Houses (c.1805), further illustrates Bulfinch's preference for a restrained Federal style.
