Useful information

Description

The Baroque staircase of Bom Jesus, leading to the sanctuary of the same name, is one of Portugal's most famous monuments. Carved from austere grey granite, it is representative of the Northern Baroque style and is enhanced by the whiteness of its limewashed walls. The sanctuary at the top, built by Carlos Amarante between 1784 and 1811, is in a more austere neo-Classical style.
