Useful information

Description

The Brough's church, probably built no earlier than the early 12C, has a small oblong nave, a short narrow chancel and rounded apse. It is situated in an enclosed area that was once the cemetery. Excavations have revealed Pictish and Norse tombs, including the Birsay symbol stone (a replica) inscribed with armed Norse warriors. The living quarters of the priests, set around a courtyard, can be seen on the northern side of the church.
