Cañón del Pato
The Green Guide

Useful information

Description

To the north of Caraz, Río Santa has dug impressive gorges at the junction of the white and black cordilleras, creating the cañón del Pato, a narrow, 1,000m-deep canyon, which is the most spectacular in the north of Peru. To dig an, albeit perilous, path suitable for motor vehicles in the mountainside, it was necessary to dig 39 tunnels over 25km long. Thanks to the 415m-high waterfall at the mouth of the canyon to the northwest, the hydroelectric power plant of Huallanca, built on the cliffside, supplies part of the steel factory of Chimbote.
