Reminiscent of New York's GE Building at Rockefeller Center, this 38-story Art Deco office tower (1989, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill), topped by a 130ft steel spire, rises in a series of setbacks that strengthen its vertical progression. Limestone constitutes most of the building's skin except for the dark green precast concrete spandrels and the green, gray and black granite of its base. The tower is set on the western edge of Cityfront Center, a 60-acre development extending east of Michigan Avenue and north to Grand Street that includes office, hotel, entertainment, retail and residential development. The integration of this project with the surrounding city and the river provide a marked contrast with the stark monoliths of Illinois Center directly across the Chicago River.
