Description

The attractive Place de l'Ancienne-Douane owes its name to the former customs house (Koïfhus) on the square. In its centre, the Schwendi fountain (1898), crowned with a statue by Bartholdi, represents General Schwendi (1522-1583) who, according to legend (much repeated yet untrue), introduced the Tokay wine variety to Alsace.
