For security reasons, tourists are advised to avoid this region. Senegal is both a country and a river which acts as a natural border with Mauritania and flows for over 1,700 km through a broad and fertile valley contrasting with the arid Sahel around it. Its highly variable flow depends on the monsoon rains and is controlled by numerous dams.
