Useful information

Description

A viewpoint offers an overall view of this vast former coalmining site. This open-cast method of mining consisted of levelling sterile layers then breaking them down while descending from terrace to terrace in order to bring out the coal seam, before extracting it in the open. The facility was operational from 1892 to 2001. A nearby mine pithead bears witness to the region's ongoing mining activity (subterranean as well as open-cast).
