Located to the southwest of the cape, this site has been an official bird sanctuary since 1964 and is one of the largest nesting grounds (70,000) in North America for gannets, relatives of the pelican. Visitors can get within a few feet of the birds. A trail commands spectacular views of the steep rugged coastline and leads to Bird Rock, the precarious haven of hundreds of gannets. The surrounding cliffs attract throngs of noisy black-legged kittiwakes, common murres and razorbills.
