  The Michelin Guide's review
This castle, the Romanesque architecture of which has undergone numerous changes, is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The castle is part of Durham University, and its keep was turned into a students' residence in 1840. Inside, the upper floors are reached via an impressive black staircase (1662). The columns in the Romanesque chapel are crowned by sandstone capitals adorned with strange shapes and grimacing faces.
