Useful information

Description

Founded by Dogen (1200-1253) in 1244, the Temple of Eternal Peace is made up of dozens of buildings spread across the mountainside, in a majestic forest setting of cedars and Japanese cedars and murmuring streams. Headquarters of the Soto Zen school, this centre of Buddhist spirituality has a live-in community of 200 monks and is dedicated to seated meditation (zazen). You can take a fascinating tour of some of the buildings (kitchens, Dogen's mausoleum, priests' hall).
