Description

Mission Socorro also was built for refugees and rebuilt after a 19C flood. An outstanding example of Spanish Mission architecture, with roof beams hand-sculpted by Piro Indians, the mission is the oldest continuously active parish in the US.Also still in use, the gilded Presidio Chapel in San Elizario is noted for its late adobe architectural style. It combines Southwestern attributes with European architectural characteristics such as buttresses.
