This vast, untamed region is uninhabited (apart from a handful of Sami); lying between the shore of the lake and the Swedish border, it has a wealth of conifers, lakes and rivers. The national park is accessible via the road from the southern end of the lake. The Svukuriset cabin 10km north of Elgå is the ideal starting point for walks and angling expeditions in the national park. In summer, a boat makes regular crossings, calling at several places between Synnervika in the north and Femundsenden in the south.
