Mapungubwe National Park, stretching beyond the Limpopo River into Zimbabwe and Botswana, is host to numerous animals as well as the remains of a trading civilisation from the 13C. It is here that the Mapungubwe treasure was discovered (on display at the Mapungubwe Museum in Pretoria), on a rocky peak where the chief and his court resided, while the people lived at its base. The royal site is a fascinating place to visit and offers a breathtaking view of the park's savannah landscape of thorn trees, mopanes and baobabs, and blocks of red sandstone.
