Description

In 1212, Eudes de Déols married Agnès de Lusignan, whose family believed that one of their ancestors was the famous fairy mermaid, Melusine, who haunted the castle at Fougères. A lovely legend, even though the present-day chateau is empty. It is nonetheless a fine example of feudal architecture, with its keep, fortified postern, machicolated wall and handsome timber structure. These severe architectural elements combine harmoniously with the elegant arcaded gallery and inner Renaissance courtyard.
