At the end of the village of Gavarnie, take the dirt track and follow the left bank of the gave (mountain torrent). Suddenly the superb Cirque de Gavarnie comes into view: three layers of snow-covered strata, peaks gleaming curiously white against ochre cliff faces, and countless silver waterfalls. The biggest one, the Grande Cascade, is fed by melt-water overflowing from the frozen lake on Monte Perdido (2,592m) on the Spanish side. The cascade falls a clear 422m into the void.
