Lying east of the Porto Antico, the old city is a picturesque maze of narrow streets flanked by tall buildings behind which the sky and the sea stretch off into the horizon. This lively, working-class neighbourhood has a charming ambiance, which is best experienced by exploring its caruggi (narrow alleyways) where you will find the occasional façade adorned with frescoes, as well as historical shops and tempting focacceria.
