Renowned doctor, anatomist and pioneering obstetrician, William Hunter (1718-1783) was also a great collector. He bequeathed his treasures to the university, which opened the Hunterian Museum in 1807. Today the museum presents the collection of coins and metals. Exhibitions chart Captain Cook's expeditions, the Romans in Scotland, ancient civilisations and British prehistory. Finally, there is a section dedicated to the archaeological digs undertaken along the Antonine Wall.
