Useful information

Description

Ferdinand I had this church built in the mid-16C to house the extraordinary mausoleum, a major work of German Renaissance sculpture, of his grandfather, Emperor Maximilian I. The church's Gothic style is partially masked by Renaissance and Baroque additions. It also became the Tyrol's national sanctuary, containing the tomb of Andreas Hofer, hero of the 1809 insurrection. The tomb of Ferdinand II of Tyrol rests in the adjacent Silver Chapel.
