Description

For safety reasons, tourists are advised to avoid this region. In a landscape of mountains and waterfalls, this astonishing neo-Gothic-style sanctuary abuts the rock face of the canyon, bristling with an abundance of towers and spires, rose windows, pinnacle turrets and flying buttresses. A twin-arched bridge straddles the precipice, connecting the imposing basilica to the other side of the canyon. The image of the Virgin of the Rosary, painted on a flat stone (laja, a sort of flagstone), presides at the centre of the main altarpiece, revered by pilgrims from Colombia Ecuador.
