Founded in 1138 for the Augustinian order, this was one of the many Border abbeys established by David I in a bid to spread monasticism in 12C Scotland. The stone church took 75 years to complete and was the setting for the coronation of Malcolm IV and many other royal events. It was often plundered and attacked before finally being abandoned after a raid in 1545.
