Tembe is the only place in Zululand where elephants native to the region live in their natural environment. This 30 000ha reserve was created in 1983 on the border with Mozambique to take in animals hunted down by poachers and endangered by civil war. Nowadays, over 200 elephants live in this environment of thorn trees, subtropical forest and pools where they come to drink and splash in the water. The reserve is also home to giraffes, white and black rhinos, and a multitude of antelopes.
