Weltenburg Abbey stands in a majestic setting on the banks of the Danube, just where the river begins to open out. The church (early 18C) is divided into an outer nave and a principal nave, both oval in form. The eye is drawn to the statue of St George (main altarpiece), whose dramatic lighting cannot fail but catch the eye. Through the orifice in the cupola can be seen the upper shell, a composition in trompe l'oeil of the Church Triumphant.
