Useful information

Description

Embracing 1,180sq mi of rugged mountains-including 40 peaks of 10,000ft elevation, 1,000 lakes and the headwaters of four important rivers-this is one of the most spectacular yet least-known corners of the continental US. Route 75 climbs up the Wood River to 8,701ft Galena Summit, then descends the Salmon River drainage. To the east are the magnificent Boulder and White Cloud Mountains, swathed in a carpet of firs. To the west rise the awesome peaks of the Sawtooth Range, a dramatic granite-dominated fault scarp formed 50 million to 70 million years ago and carved by ice, wind and rain. Valleys and lakes were scoured from the rock. The most developed of four large morainal lakes on the east slope of the Sawtooths is Redfish Lake, named for the sockeye salmon that traditionally spawned in its waters. A visitor center, log-cabin lodge, marina and beach make this a popular destination.
