Useful information

Description

This fort was built in the 17C during a campaign to fortify the bay. Its star-shaped layout is reminiscent of Vauban's citadels. The fort has two enormous bastions facing the sea and forms a circle around a real town. It remained occupied by the English until 1922, when they abandoned the town, leaving it to the Irish. Although in ruins, the buildings recreate the oppressive atmosphere in the garrisons exposed to all attacks, and the ramparts offer pretty views over Kinsale and the estuary. Beyond the fort, there is a pleasant coastal path that takes you to the point, by leading along the gully.
