The old town fans out around the central market square, and has retained its authenticity, with its brightly coloured wooden houses (17C-18C) and narrow streets and alleyways. The narrowest street has the curious name of "Cat Whipper Alley" (Kattpiskargränden). Standing at the top of Kyrkogatan is Ulrika Eleonora Kyrka, a pretty wooden church, built in 1700. To the left is the town hall (1856), designed by EB Lohrman. On the other side, two minuscule wooden buildings (1687 and 1720) were used by customs.
