Useful information

Description

Founded in the 16C, Higashi Hongan-ji became the headquarters of the Jodo Shin-shu sect in 1602 and Shinran Shonin's mausoleum was transferred here. The Founder's Hall, Goei-do, is one of the largest wooden edifices in the world. Walking down the corridor separating the Goei-do from the Amida Hall, you will see a kezuna in a glass box. It is one of the ropes used to raise the beams of Goei-do and is made from hair donated by female believers. The largest is 10m long and weighs a ton.
