Useful information

Description

This Museum was opened in 1978 by the 14th generation of the Raku family, a long line of ceramic artists. The space is as sober as the tea bowls it houses, but also presents sumptuous pieces dating from the time of the first Raku, who were executed by Chojiro (born in the 16C) up to that of Raku Kichizaemon (born in 1949). The simplicity and austerity of the bowls with their thick, almost rough sides immediately found favour with those who, like the shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa, wanted to transform the tea ceremony into a moment of profound meditation from the 15C on.
