Limassol Castle

Useful information

Description

The Ottoman-era external walls hide the vestiges of a Frankish citadel built in the 13C. It replaced an older castle, where Richard the Lionheart married Berengaria of Navarre in 1191. Gothic vaults, dark corridors and narrow staircases are wonderfully evocative of medieval times. Under the Ottomans, the place was a prison. You can see the rows of cells, where architectural fragments and the tombstones of knights are on display.
