Useful information

Description

Begun in the 17C, the church with a Greek cross floor plan was never completed. A dome was added and it was inaugurated in 1966. The local expression "like work on Santa Engrácia" is commonly used to describe projects that drag on interminably! It is now the National Pantheon, where some of Portugal's historical figures are buried: Camões, Henry the Navigator and Vasco de Gama and, since 2001, the fado singer Amália Rodrigues, the first woman to be transferred here.
