Useful information

Description

The development of the Isle of Dogs began early in the 19C, with the construction of West India Docks, designed to receive rum and sugar from the West Indies. London's first commercial docks, they operated behind high walls and had their own police force. The buildings and warehouses are the work of George Gwilt. Following their closure in 1980, the docks were designated an enterprise zone with the intention to create an alternative hub to the City.
