St Mary-le-Bow
The Green Guide
Cheapside, London EC2V 6AU
The tower rising over Cheapside houses the famous Bow Bells and supports a majestic belfry (1671-1680). A 3m-long copper dragon ridden by a tightrope walker serves as a weathervane 72 m above the ground. The Norman crypt has its original columns with cubic capitals; the arches (the bows) have given their name to the church and to the high court or the Archdiocese of Canterbury, the Court of Arches, which has met here since the 12C.
