East cemetery: Mon-Fri 10am-5pm, weekends 11am-5pm (£4); guided tours Sat-2pm (£8) - West cemetery: guided tours only (1hr), Mon-Fri-1.45pm, weekends 11am-4pm (£12, inclusive of admission charge to East cemetery) - closed during burials and 25-26 Dec


Shrouded in mystery and stories of vampires - one of which hit the headlines in the 1970s - this cemetery, opened in 1839, is home to around 53 000 tombs. A delightful place for a bucolic stroll, the cemetery is divided into two by Swain's Lane. Famous people buried in the eastern section include writer George Eliot and Karl Marx, while the western section houses the graves of Michael Faraday and painter Dante Gabriel Rossetti.
