Useful information

Description

Designed by Pritzker Prize-winner Jose Rafael Moneo of Madrid, this sand-colored cathedral was completed in 2002, replacing the church destroyed in the earthquake of 1994. At 48,000sq ft, the seat of the archdiocese of Los Angeles holds 2,500 parishioners and, because it is one foot longer than St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City, ranks as the third-largest Roman Catholic cathedral in the world. The 5.5-acre site is decked out with Mission-style colonnades, biblically inspired gardens, and a 150ft-tall, copper-roofed campanile with three large tolling bells. Inside, natural light enters through alabaster clerestory windows and illuminates John Nava's tapestries, which depict 135 saints.
