Useful information

Description

Construction of this colossal cathedral began in 1852, in the Romanesque-Byzantine style by architect Espérandieu at the behest of the future Napoleon III who wanted to win over the church and the Marseillais as well as develop trade with the East. This ostentatious building was in part built on the site of the former Major cathedral, whose Romanesque remains are still visible. Since 2014, a new promenade has brought a renewed sense of space to the cathedral.
