For safety reasons, tourists are advised to avoid this region. Dominating the Nile, on the right bank, this vast necropolis dug out of the limestone rock has 39 tombs dating from the Middle Kingdom and intended for great lords. The sepultures are renowned for their splendid mural paintings illustrating daily life, agricultural work, hunting, fishing and military scenes in rich detail. Note, for example, the Caravan of Asians in the Tomb of Khnumhotep III.
