Useful information

Description

Mérida Cathedral dominates the Zócalo, its uncluttered façade surrounded by two bell towers. The building, completed in 1598, has had a tormented history. It was pillaged during the Mexican revolution, which explains its rather stark interior. Note however, in the chapel to the left of the altar, the statue of Christ of the ampulla, still venerated to this day. Independence also left its mark when the Spanish arms adorning the façade were replaced by the Mexican eagle.
