The basilica dates back to the 5C-6C; its current appearance results from different eras. Admire the remarkable polyptych of the Passion (14C) and see the superb chapels, including the Cappella dei Magi with the sarcophagus that is said to have held the relics of the Three Wise Men, and especially the Cappella Portinari, a gem of the Lombard Renaissance: the superb marble arch of St Peter the Martyr standing in its centre is one of the highpoints of Italian Gothic sculpture.
