The Modern Art Gallery is housed in the handsome Villa Reale. Built in the late 18C for Prince Belgioioso, it was the residence of Napoleon 1 during his reign over Italy (1805-1815). A collection of 19C works of art (the city's main collection), the Vismara Collection (20C Italian and French artists) and the Grassi Collection (Manet, Van Gogh, Gaugin, Cézanne) occupy three floors of the building.
