Useful information

Description

This cathedral was built in 1172 by William II, grandson of Roger II, with the intention of equalling the largest cathedrals in Europe and rivalling the Palatine chapel in Palermo, using the best workmen and without stinting on materials. The end result is a sumptuous monument, with a perfectly proportioned interior where the walls are almost entirely covered in golden and multi-coloured Byzantine mosaics.
